I am doing the same job as my colleague but we are classified at different grades. Why is this?

At first glance, one job may seem to be the same as another, when in fact it may not be.  Job classification systems seek to uphold the principle of “equal pay for work of equal value” and only a proper analysis of jobs within the broad context of organizational requirements can establish whether or not jobs are indeed alike.  Sometimes problems of staff performance may create the perception that a higher graded job is at the same level as another at a lower grade.
